Artist Statement

I combine painterly realism in my subjects with the spontaneous abstraction of the background. The animals are recognizable and intentionally rendered, while their environments remain undefined, chaotic, and free. This tension animates both elements and suggests a deeper resonance or purpose.

These environments originate from discarded boards—surfaces once used as masks, shields, or drop cloths in other projects. I study these remnants and wait for an image to emerge. At times the environment evokes an Eden; at others, a sense of destruction. Each carries its own distinct beauty.

The animals, in contrast, stand as bold, dignified specimens, holding their full stature and splendor. Their relationship with the environment becomes the spark of the painting. The paint itself produces unexpected passages: patterns echo, flat planes open into depth, and concrete forms seek harmony with abstraction. This interplay creates an image alive with tension and possibility.
